Leveling Pads & Shims: An Introduction

Leveling pads are placed beneath machinery to support its weight, providing both vibration damping and stable support. They are commonly used with CNC machine tools.

A leveling pad is also a specialized tool for inspecting guideway accuracy. Typically, a spirit level is placed on the pad to check the straightness and twist of the guideway in the vertical plane. Additionally, a dial indicator is often mounted on the pad to measure parallelism between the guideway and other adjacent guideway surfaces.

The shape of the pad varies according to the specific geometric profile of the guideway cross-section. These pads are made of cast iron. After planing, they are hand-scraped to achieve a precise match with the guideway surface.
